Copyright and DMCA

Last updated October 29, 2026

We respect the work of photographers, writers and businesses. If something here uses your work without permission, tell us and we will take it down.

Sending a notice

Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512), a notice needs:

  • a description of the copyrighted work;
  • where the material appears on this site, so we can find it;
  • your name, mailing address, email and, if you like, a phone number;
  • a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorized by the owner, its agent or the law;
  • a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the notice is accurate and that you own the copyright or may act for the owner;
  • your physical or electronic signature.

The form below asks for all of these. Typing your name counts as your electronic signature. A person reads every notice, and we usually remove the material within two business days.

If your material was removed

If you sent us something that was taken down after a notice and you believe that was a mistake, you can send a counter-notice through the same form. Include what was removed and where it was, a statement under penalty of perjury that it was removed by mistake or misidentification, your name, address and phone number, and your consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your address (or for New Jersey if you are outside the United States). We forward counter-notices to the person who complained, and may restore the material after 10 to 14 business days unless they tell us they have filed a lawsuit.

Repeat infringers

We stop accepting submissions from anyone who repeatedly sends material that infringes someone else's copyright.

Photos on this site

Most photos are used under Creative Commons or similar licences, and each one is credited on the photo credits page with its author and licence.

Sending a false notice can make you liable for damages. If you are unsure whether a use is infringing, talk to a lawyer first.
