Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth: a local guide

Netflix is turning the old Fort Monmouth Army post into its East Coast production campus. Here is what is being built, when it is due, and what is worth your time nearby.

What is being built

Netflix bought about 292 acres of the former fort, along Route 35, the Avenue of Memories and Oceanport Avenue, and plans to spend roughly $1 billion on it. When finished, the campus will have twelve soundstages totaling nearly 500,000 square feet, along with production support buildings and community amenities.

The first four 22,000-square-foot stages sit in the fort's McAfee Zone in Oceanport. Netflix says it is training local crew through partnerships with IATSE Locals 798 and 600, and expects the build to create nearly 4,000 construction jobs.

A century of Fort Monmouth

The Army opened the post in 1917 as a Signal Corps training camp, and for most of the next hundred years it was a center of military communications and electronics research. Between 1941 and 1946 its officer candidate school alone commissioned more than 21,000 Signal Corps lieutenants. The fort closed on September 15, 2011, and the main road through it reopened to the public in 2017.
