Borough of Freehold

Freehold Borough

Freehold Borough is the seat of Monmouth County. A courthouse opened here in 1715 and a village grew around it, and the Battle of Monmouth was fought nearby in June 1778. The borough separated from surrounding Freehold Township in 1919 and kept the county government buildings near the courthouse.

Main Street, also County Route 537, runs through downtown past the American Hotel, which opened in 1824. The railroad station on Throckmorton Street dates to 1852. Bruce Springsteen grew up in the borough and attended Freehold Borough High School, and his song "My Hometown" refers to it.
