Borough of Highlands

Highlands

Highlands is a borough on the Raritan Bayshore, between Sandy Hook Bay and the Shrewsbury River. The Twin Lights of the Navesink, built in 1862 on Lighthouse Hill, look out over Sandy Hook, and Guglielmo Marconi demonstrated wireless telegraphy there in 1899.

Route 36 crosses the river on the Highlands-Sea Bright Bridge toward Sandy Hook, which became part of Gateway National Recreation Area in 1975. Sport fishing grew here in the 1920s, and a SeaStreak ferry runs to Manhattan from Conner's Ferry Landing. Swimmer Gertrude Ederle learned to swim at the Miller Street beach.
