The Asbury Park oceanfront runs along the city's ocean edge, with a public beach on one side and the boardwalk on the other. The city sells beach badges, which are required from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Children 12 and under do not need one, though they must be supervised by an adult.

The boardwalk itself has a few rules that differ from other Jersey Shore towns. Bicycles are not allowed from 10am to midnight, and skates, skateboards and scooters are barred except for ADA-compliant mobility devices. Chairs, towels and blankets cannot be set up on the boardwalk. The shops and venues along it are privately owned and operate separately from the city.

Dogs are allowed only at the Asbury Park Dog Beach and are kept off the boardwalk from May 16 through September 14. Beaches and boardwalk are smoke-free, alcohol and glass containers are prohibited, and tents and canopies on the sand can draw a fine. The city has also announced a state tax credit award of up to $75 million toward restoring Convention Hall, which sits on the boardwalk.
