Borough of Spring Lake

Spring Lake

Spring Lake was incorporated in 1892 from part of Wall Township and takes its name from a spring-fed lake. During the Gilded Age it became a seaside resort for society families from New York and Philadelphia, and some of that era's architecture survives.

St. Catharine Church, built by Martin Maloney on a knoll above the lake, had its cornerstone laid on St. Patrick's Day in 1901. The Martin Maloney Cottage on Morris Avenue is on the National Register of Historic Places. The oceanfront has a beach, boardwalk and dunes, and the area is nicknamed the Irish Riviera.
