Bell Works occupies the former Bell Labs headquarters in Holmdel, designed by architect Eero Saarinen. From 1962 to 2007 it housed more than 6,000 Bell Labs employees, and later Lucent and Alcatel-Lucent research. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been redeveloped as a mixed-use space of roughly two million square feet.

Inside is an open central atrium under a glass ceiling of solar panels, ringed by offices, coworking space, retail, restaurants including Bar Bella, a basketball court, and event rooms. The Bell Theater and the Axelrod Performing Arts Academy are on site, and a weekly farmers market, Bell Works Fresh, is listed.

The site gives hours of 6 a.m. to midnight daily, with temporary and private-event closures noted, so call 732-226-8818 or check the site before you go. It works well as a rainy-day wander.
